Delivering Energy Performance Insights in Burnley

Enhancing Comfort and Reducing Energy Costs

In 2022 and 2023, Knauf Energy Solutions embarked on a transformative thermal retrofit project involving 23 nearly new-build homes in Burnley, UK. This initiative showcased the power of measured energy performance data in identifying and delivering quantified savings while highlighting the limitations of traditional EnergyPerformance Certificates (EPCs).

What We Did

• Precision Retrofit: The existing loft insulation was replaced with similar materials, ensuring strict quality assurance for a high-standard installation. This targeted approach addressed unseen inefficiencies often overlooked by traditional energy assessments.

• In-Depth Performance Analysis: Using our advanced technology, we calculated Space Heating Demands (SHD) for each property before and after the retrofit, providing a clear and accurate picture of real-world energy performance.

The Value We Delivered

1. Unveiling the importance of Quality:a. Our analysis revealed an average SHD reduction of 14% post-retrofit, highlighting that ensuring strict quality assurance for a high-standard installation is as important as using good materials for long-term performance. This insight would not have been possible using a standardEPC assessment.

2. Highlighting EPC Inaccuracy:
a. By comparing our measured SHDs with EPC-calculated space heating estimates, we uncovered a stark discrepancy:
i. EPC space heating demands were, on average, 63% lower than actual measured space heating demand.
ii. The average EPC estimate of 3,145 kWh/year contrasted sharply with measured consumption of 7,500 kWh/year—an eye-opening 2.4x higher.

Why It Matters

This project demonstrated how in-use energy performance data drives meaning full change. By bridging the gap between theoretical estimates and actual performance, we empower housing providers to make informed decisions, reduce energy waste, improve quality of retrofits and uncover savings that would otherwise remain hidden.Projects like this prove that it is not just about retrofitting homes - but to do it in a way that is reshapes the future of energy efficiency with precision and purpose.
